Dear Parents,

Every child experiences losing an item s/he loves. This loss may not mean much to us as adults, but it may be an upsetting experience for the child, and it is important to understand it and to listen to them, especially when our efforts do not help to compensate them for what has been lost.

Family Activities

  • “This lost bunny looks sad,” says Bear. We can chat with our child about the bunny’s sadness. How do we look when we are sad?
  • We can try to remember the feeling of losing something we love. How did we feel? What did we do?
  • We can give some of our toys: we may want to look with our child at some of his/her toys or items that s/he wants to give to other children.
  • What If: we can talk with our child about what we would do if we found money on the street, or a toy that was left in the park.
  • The Lost Socks: in our homes, there are often drawers full of single socks. We can embark on a search-party with our child to find the missing ones! Our child will enjoy searching and matching pairs of socks!
  • A Missing Item Announcement: together we design an advertisement for a lost item in the house, and hang it in a place for family members to see.
  • We can read advertisements in the book about lost things. Which ones did our child love? It is enriching for our child to read the ads posted in the streets, as the child’s exposure to the printed graphic symbols will make it easier for him/her to learn to write and read letters later.
  • Enjoy your reading!
