Born without wings, Jonathan is unable to fly like the other children of Gull Mountain. He discovers he is different and becomes isolated from his peers. Jonathan becomes the hero of the story by listening to his wise friend Sara and by not being afraid to turn his difference into his greatest strength. Through his experience he feels the desire to change the way things are done on Gull Mountain.
